“HERE TO HELP PEOPLE IN NEED, IN THE CITY WE LOVE”

RACHEL MORRIS. FOUNDER

Welcome to the Friends of Derby 500 Club

Do you know a family, or an individual struggling to pay for what many of us take for granted?

Then we can help! Our group is setup to help people in need across Derby and surrounding towns. Our group seeks nothing but to help needy people in the city we love.

We have adopted a national fund-raising concept and brought it to Derby to help those in need.

Our 500 Club is made up of members who pay just one pound a week so that once we reach 500 members £500 can be given to a worthy cause every seven days.

We have given away over £40,000 in Derby and surrounding areas, those we have helped include:

A young family living in a hotel after losing everything in a house fire

Sensory toys and fun items for a terminally ill child

A working Dad knocked off his moped and unable to claim sick pay

Money for food and utilities for families living in poverty

Laptop for a homeless teenager working his way towards university

A replacement bike for a vulnerable young person not able to use public transport

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Do you know a family, or an individual  struggling to pay for what many of us take for granted?

We have given away thousands so far and received nothing but positivity, we have changed lives with gestures of kindness and cash.  £500 might not sound like a lot of money to some people, but when you are in need and have no means of finding it… it can be life changing.

500 like-minded people each set up a standing order for £1 per week into the fund, enabling us to donate £500 every 7 days to someone in need.

Our community of 500 then keeps an ear out for local people, friends, neighbours, colleagues, worthy causes etc. and can nominate them for the £500.

Each week, a small voluntary panel of five will consider nominations and decide by majority vote who will receive the award.

WHAT WILL I NEED TO DO IF I JOIN?

That’s up to you. You’ll be able to make nominations whenever you like, or you can choose to simply donate and watch as your money helps those in need each week.

You’ll be invited to join a private Facebook group where we keep you informed of news, progress and nominations etc. You can be as active or as inactive in the group as you like.

Honestly, once you’ve set up your standing order, that’s it and it will always be just £1, never more.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

It’s surprising what worthy causes you’ll hear about once you’re listening out for them, people in your street; people suffering from illness or unemployment; broken families; victims of crime; people dealing with unexpected periods of bad luck; the list is endless.

Obviously there is an element of trust involved between all of us. We need to trust that your nominations are genuine, and you need to trust that I and the other admins will handle your money fairly.

The admin panel is a small group of local, professional people, with a track record of trusted work.

Where there is more than one nomination no cash will be handed out until the majority of the admin panel is agreed on the recipient.

There are multiple signatories on the bank account.

We will be as transparent as possible.

Messages of thanks and photos of how your money is being used, will be posted in the Facebook group and on the news page of this website, (subject to approval from the recipient). You’ll be kept as up to date as possible, because it wouldn’t be happening without you.

WHO WILL RECEIVE MY MONEY?

Any worthy cause or person in need with a connection to Derby or Derbyshire will be considered.

The money will be used to do good, going to whoever needs it most.

For example: we have provided funding for second hand mobility scooters, for help towards food shopping and utility bills, for specialist glasses, clothing and toiletries for a young man let down by his family and services, for a pensioner in financial crisis.

You’ll need to be mindful that not every recipient will resonate with you, but we will all be bound together by the need to do some good.

There will be no political, gender, race or religious bias in the decision making.

Any remaining nominations each week (and there are likely to be many once we get going) will be carried over onto a list and will remain on the list until we get chance to pay them or until such time as the donation is no longer required.

Emergency nominations will get priority if agreed by the admin panel.

Click below to send us your story, and add NOMINATION in the subject bar.

NOMINATE SOMEONE NOW ONLY if you are a paid up member
