How the nomination procedure works

The nominations procedure

Do you know a family, or an individual struggling to pay for what many of us take for granted?

So, how do you nominate someone?

Find out more about the nominations procedure below.

To clarify, nominating isn’t an obligation, you don’t have to do it, but it’s what we’re here for. So never hold back if you feel you’ve spotted a need somewhere.

Remember only paying up members can nominate.

1.

Most importantly – you need to provide as much info as possible.

Full names (which will be kept confidential), geographical location, how you know them, how they found themselves in their particular situation, how you think our £500 might help. Importantly because this is intended for beneficiaries with a connection to Derby or Derbyshire if they don’t live in Derby please explain their connection to the city or county.

Detail is key and could mean the difference between a yes or no decision.

2.

‘Lazy nominating’ will not be considered.

Please don’t send links to web stuff with a message saying “Rachel, can we help?”.

Similarly, please don’t just tag me into posts and expect me to do the rest. If you feel strongly enough to nominate, you need to provide the background.

3.

Email us your nomination.

Please email your nomination to friendsofderby500club@outlook.com with NOMINATION in the subject box.

I’m not Facebook friends with everyone in the group, so some messenger messages might be missed. Only email guarantees that I see it.

4.

No crowdfunding.

To re-iterate, we prefer to avoid sending money to JustGiving or Crowdfunding pages which are receiving support from other means.

What we don’t want is for our money to be swallowed up into a pot. We need it to have an impact in its own right, by addressing an immediate need or emergency, whereby the recipient is thrown a lifeline that they may otherwise never have had.

5.

We may not all agree with the decision.

You may not always agree with a decision or a giveaway. A cause or recipient may not resonate with you.

We may all feel like this at one time or another, but we’re not here to make judgments and we are all here for the same reason – because we’re all really decent people who want to help others.

If you have a strong feeling about any particular case, feel free to email to discuss it.

6.

No animal charities.

At the very beginning of the Friends 500 journey, we decided that we would not encourage nominations for animal charities.

There are a couple of reasons; one being that there are just SO many, we fear we’d be overrun with requests, so where would we even start, especially when human need is at such astronomical levels.

Secondly, admin members (and we won’t lie – this is purely selfish), could not bear having to read horror stories about the mistreatment of animals.

We have a contact for groups supporting animals if you want to email for a link.

7.

Investigation & review mode.

On receipt of all nominations, we shift into investigation mode: we do our homework, and it’s not because we’re untrusting, it’s because we are responsible for 500 people’s money and have to be able to justify every decision we make, about every penny we give away – so we practice due diligence and as such will decline any nomination that raises questions.

We are happy to receive nominations from members for family or friends but we cannot accept self-nominations.

8.

One nomination per member.

To help in the selection process and to prioritise those in most need only one nomination per member will be accepted at any one time.

If your nomination is not successful it will be carried over for consideration during the next giveaway. You will know the situation of any potential nominees better than the panel and are therefore in a stronger position to prioritise need.

If you wish to withdraw a nomination to submit a more urgent request, please email.

9.

Panel review.

When a decision is not straight forward, the panel of trusted admins will consider the nominations and the decision will be based on the majority.
